Namma Metro Yellow Line to Open in June 2025 with Limited Stops and Trains

Bengaluru, May 2025 – After several delays, Namma Metro Yellow Line is finally set to begin partial operations in June 2025. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has confirmed that the service will initially run between five major stations, using three driverless trains running at 30-minute intervals.

📍 Namma Metro: What’s Opening in June?

The Yellow Line, a 19.15 km route from R.V. Road to Bommasandra, has been ready for months. However, launch delays occurred due to issues in receiving the driverless train sets.

BMRCL’s current plan:

  • Only five major stations will be operational at launch
  • Trains every 30 minutes
  • More stations and better frequency to be added in phases

“With just three trains, we can manage one every half hour. As more train sets arrive, we’ll increase the frequency and open more stations,”

– BMRCL Official

🚉 Key Stations Expected to Open

While the full list hasn’t been officially released, the following major stations are expected to be included:

  • R.V. Road (Terminal)
  • Bommasandra (Terminal)
  • Jayadeva Interchange
  • Central Silk Board
  • Bommanahalli or Electronic City (tentative)

😠 Commuter Reactions

Many daily commuters expressed disappointment with the limited opening.

“I was looking forward to using the Yellow Line for my daily travel. Now I’ll have to go far to access a working station. It’s frustrating after such a long wait.”

– Ramesh H, software engineer from BTM Layout

“We’ve seen the metro tracks ready for months, and now it won’t stop at my nearby station. There’s no proper bus link either.”

– Sneha S., resident of Kodichikanahalli

🚆 Why Was the Yellow Line Delayed?

The key issue was the delayed delivery of driverless coaches. In 2019, Chinese company CRRC was awarded a ₹1,578 crore contract to deliver 216 coaches, but failed to set up a local facility as required.

As a result:

  • BMRCL issued notices and considered invoking a ₹372 crore bank guarantee
  • CRRC partnered with Titagarh Rail Systems (Kolkata-based) to fulfill the order

✅ Current Status of Yellow Line

  • Trial runs began in March 2024
  • Two train sets have been under testing
  • Third train set arrived at Hebbagodi Depot on May 13, 2025
  • Testing for the third train began on May 15
  • Two more trains expected by July–August

Eventually, the Yellow Line will operate with:

  • 15 six-car trains
  • Totaling 90 metro coaches

This line connects South Bengaluru’s residential and tech hubs to the main metro network, including:

  • Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road
  • Ragigudda
  • Jayadeva Hospital
  • BTM Layout
  • Central Silk Board
  • Bommanahalli
  • Hongasandra
